Occupational Audiology

Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, Control of Noise at Work requires employers to make available hearing checks for employees who are exposed above the upper exposure action value, and to assist in preventative audiometric testing for those exposed above the lower exposure action value.

You may already have performed risk assessments regarding noise in your workplace, but if not, you will need to take action if any of the following apply:

  • Noise is intrusive – as noisy as a busy road, vacuum cleaner or a crowded restaurant for most of the working day.
  • Employees have to raise their voices to carry out a normal conversation when about 2m apart for at least part of the day.
  • Employees use noisy powered tools or machinery for more than 30 minutes each day.
  • Your sector is one known to have noisy tasks – construction, demolition or road repair; woodworking; plastics processing; engineering; textile manufacture: general fabrication; forging or stamping; paper or board making; canning or bottling; foundries; waste or recycling.
  • There are noises due to impacts (such as hammering, drop forging, pneumatic impact tools etc. explosive sources such as cartridge operated tools, or guns.
